A Recognition Built on Direct Comparison with McKinsey, BCG and Bain

The Hidden Champion award is one of the most demanding and credible quality seals for strategy consultancies in the German-speaking market. Unlike many industry rankings, it is based on an independent survey of more than 1,000 experienced consulting clients at top-management level. Participation cannot be applied for.

To qualify as a Hidden Champion, a consultancy must prove itself as a true alternative to McKinsey, BCG and Bain (MBB) under real competitive conditions. Three criteria must be fulfilled simultaneously:

  1. Lower brand awareness than MBB
    Among executives of German companies with revenues exceeding €1 billion, a Hidden Champion’s unaided brand awareness must not exceed 15%. The award deliberately prioritizes performance over prominence.
  2. Active in the same competitive arena as MBB
    At least 50% of surveyed clients must also work with one or more of McKinsey, BCG or Bain. The benchmark therefore reflects direct client experience, not theoretical comparison.
  3. Rated superior in at least one strategic specialty
    In at least one clearly defined strategic field, the consultancy must be rated higher by its clients than all three MBB firms.

A Multi-Stage, Scientifically Grounded Evaluation

The identification of Hidden Champions follows a three-stage analysis process designed to ensure objectivity and robustness:

An independent expert panel from academia and industry first identifies potential candidates with exceptional strategic capabilities.
A pre-study then assesses whether these candidates meet the structural prerequisites to compete directly with MBB.
Only then do finalists enter the main study, a comprehensive client survey that determines the final rankings.

The research design combines scientifically validated quantitative methods with qualitative approaches from economics, psychology and social sciences. Each consultancy is benchmarked against McKinsey, BCG and Bain across more than 30 evaluation criteria, including strategic excellence, execution capability, analytical rigor, collaboration, trust, integrity and perceived client value.
