Handelsblatt Chemie 2026 conference in Berlin: Courage, Resilience and Innovation as Growth Drivers

From May 19–21, 2026, leading representatives of the chemical industry gathered in Berlin for the Handelsblatt Chemie 2026 conference. Under the theme “Growth Drivers: Courage, Resilience and Innovation”, executives from industry, politics, and consulting discussed the future competitiveness of Europe’s chemical sector.

One message became clear throughout the event: the industry is no longer facing a temporary downturn but a profound structural transformation. At the same time, the discussions highlighted that periods of disruption also create new strategic opportunities.

TTE Strategy joined the conversation by presenting insights from its “Chemicals 2036” scenario analysis and discussing possible future pathways for the European chemical industry.

The chemical industry has reached a strategic turning point

Many conference discussions revolved around one central question: How can Europe secure its long-term industrial competitiveness?

The starting point is challenging. Rising energy costs, geopolitical tensions, increasing regulation, and declining innovation momentum are placing enormous pressure on the sector. At the same time, technological breakthroughs and global power shifts are fundamentally reshaping established market dynamics.

One key insight from the event was particularly clear: the real challenge lies not in isolated crises, but in the overlap of multiple structural pressures.

As a result, traditional planning approaches are becoming increasingly ineffective. Companies must learn how to operate under uncertainty and build strategic resilience.

Why scenario thinking matters more than forecasting

During the conference, TTE Strategy shared key findings from its “Chemicals 2036” scenario analysis. The objective is not to predict one exact future, but to create robust strategic perspectives for decision-makers.

The analysis outlines six possible future scenarios for the industry:

  • Geopolitical Block Formation
  • Technological Quantum Leap
  • Green Transformation
  • Fragmented Compliance
  • Asian Dominance
  • Production Exodus

The event discussions clearly showed that companies increasingly recognize that the future will not develop linearly.

Strategic resilience therefore does not come from certainty, but from the ability to anticipate multiple developments and respond with flexibility.

“Where to Play” and “How to Win” become leadership priorities

Another recurring theme throughout the conference was the need for strategic clarity.

Chemical companies are increasingly confronted with two critical questions:

Where to Play?

Where will future value creation take place? Which activities should remain in Europe, and which need to become globally organized?

How to Win?

Which business models will remain differentiated and profitable in the future?

In an environment shaped by rising costs and growing regulatory complexity, strategic focus becomes essential.

Companies must actively prioritize:

  • Which technologies to invest in
  • Which markets remain strategically relevant
  • Which partnerships are necessary

Which parts of the value chain truly create differentiation

Innovation requires speed and collaboration

Technological innovation was another major focus of the event.

Advances in AI, biotechnology, and material science are expected to reshape the chemical industry significantly over the coming years. At the same time, discussions highlighted that innovation capability will increasingly depend on collaboration.

Transformation cannot be managed in isolation. Successful organizations are building ecosystems with customers, research institutions, startups, and strategic partners.

In this environment, speed becomes a competitive advantage.

What successful companies are doing differently

Across multiple panels and discussions, a common picture of future-ready organizations emerged. Successful chemical companies combine:

  • Strategic clarity
  • Structured transformation
  • Courageous decision-making
  • High adaptability
  • Strong employee and partner alignment

One particularly noticeable shift concerns leadership itself: resilience is no longer viewed purely as risk management, but as the active ability to shape the future.

Conclusion: The future of chemicals is being decided now

The Handelsblatt Chemie 2026 conference demonstrated how profoundly the industry is already changing. At the same time, it became clear that companies cannot afford to approach the current situation defensively.

The coming years will favor organizations that see uncertainty not as paralysis, but as an opportunity for strategic reinvention, innovation, and bold action.

The future of Europe’s chemical industry will not emerge by chance. It will be actively shaped.
